He did kind of butcher ‘Malare Paesu’, I agree! But then Chitra’s voice also sounded suspect in that song, so I’d like to blame it on bad sound production. ;) Or maybe he just needs to stick to songs sung in a lower pitch. Metti Oli Kaathodu or Sangathil Paadadha Kavidhai, for example, came out before Geetanjali and he still manages to sound nice there.
As for Kaatu Vazhi, you’re right about how someone could just go onto the next song before the accompaniments kicked in. It sounds so much better with the nice chord placements after the first minute of a droning Mottai. :)

Manoj, I liked Kaattu vazhi and its interlude instantly despite not being a huge fan of IR’s voice. If he chooses songs like this with a rustic touch rather than singing songs like “Malare pesu mouna mozhi”(Geethanjali) he often scores. The song ended with me wishing for atleast one different charanam/interlude. I m glad that I was patient enough to listen to this song fully and not brush it off aside as another usual philosophical Raaja number.
