Phunking up Don
This time the influence is subtler, but it is obvious the Black Eyed Peas listen to their fair share of Desi music.
This is their new single - Don’t Phunk with my Heart. Check out the intro that is totally lifted from Yeh Mera Dil from Don. And I’m sure the beats are also just a resynthesized, more “funked up” version of the original. Though not as blatant as their previous inspiration, the BEP seem to be getting some mileage from our 70s-80s music.

I really enjoy reading your reviews. Keep them coming.
There are couple of DJs who have a fascination for Kalyanji Anandji. here is an entire album “Bombay The Hard Way: Guns, Cars And Sitars” made entirely with samples that are c&p from the 70s albums of K&A.

Thanks Sarat, also for pointing out the remix album. The DJs here are fascinated by the extensive use of moog sounds that the Hindi composers used back in the 70s. You only have to check Ebay to find out how much a 70s Hindi classic goes for these days. The LPs are sold from places like Holland even, and sometimes go upto 50$. Even though there are lot of digital synthesizers and/or software (VST) plugins that can emulate these analog synth sounds, some still insist on sampling from the original LPs. Plus, I think they regard it more of a collection item that we do. So, next time you’re in India and happen upon some vintage LPs, grab them without a second thought. You can probably make some serious cash on Ebay. :)
Some Useless Trivia: The movie ‘Ghost World’ opens with the main character dancing to a Mohd.Rafi song. Later she goes to a garage sale and asks for a 60s Hindi “rock” LP. Kind of interesting, I thought.
