Morphing Raja
I’m not a trained musician, but I dabble a bit with the keyboard. And sometimes when you “dabble”, you happen upon some interesting ear-teasers. Take for example two Bharathiraja movies - Alaigal Oyvathillai (1981) and Kizhakku Cheemaiyile (1993). I’ve always wondered if Bharathiraja maybe asked Rahman to compose a song like, say, um…Vaadi En Kappa Kezhange. So Rahman fiddles with the notes of the original song and comes up with another fun song - Maanoothu Mandhayile. Don’t believe me? Then take a listen.
Maanoothum - Vaadi Kappa Kezhange
And for those confused by my amateurish attempts at playing the songs, try singing Vaadi en Kappa Kezhange thus,
Vaadi En Kappa Kezha, Vaadi En Kappa Kezhange
Potta Pulla Porandhadhinu Polikaattil Koovum Kuyile
Of course, this is just a hypothesis and maybe it was the first-time task of composing for the “great” Bharathiraja playing on Rahman’s sub-conscious that resulted in the song. Who knows? And like some may ask…who cares?! :)
PS: There’s also another mash-up file that I uploaded, the songs of which, I believe, are in no way related to each other. But it’s interesting how the intros of both these songs seemed to easily flow into each other.

Have you played these on the keyboard? What keyboard do you have?
BTW I also play the keyboard.

Yes I did…on my Korg Triton. Hopefully you play better than me.

I have not learnt it formally. Hence I’m not an expert. I have a Yamaha PSR 530.

Hi, you are right about “Manoothu” good observation. Actually you neednt have gone to all the trouble of changing lyrics to point out the similiarity. Just by mental humming, its easy and quick to discover that the words “vaadi en kappa kizhange” bears the same tune/notes as “mankutti vachcha mayile”. Yes, could be a case of inspiration from Ilayaraja, which is a little rare for Rahman. He usually has his sandhams inspired by MSV and old Hindi composers once in a while

Or he recycles some of his own sandhams. I guess in an industry where blatant song lifts have become no-big-deals, lifting sandhams hardly qualifies as an offense. btw, I just added those clips so there could be no confusion, esp. for those who are not too comfortable with mental humming. :)
